 algae issue
for the past week or so i have been having a algae outbreak on the side of the tank and large rocks on the bottom. i picked up API algaefix and have been treating the water/tank with it. So far it hasnt been preventing it. The algae itself is brown in color. Any ideas or better remedies to fix this issue ???
thank you.

You can stop using the Algaefix...it won't cure brown algae, which actually isn't algae at all, it's diatoms. Is your tank fairly new? Brown algae typically appears in tanks that are in the process of cycling and are unstable. It won't hurt the fish, and can be scrubbed off fairly easily. Eventually, as you keep up with the regular changes, scrub off the algae, and your tank stabilizes, the brown algae will gradually disappear.

Yep...brown algae goes away on its own once the tank no longer has excess nutrients that are typically found while cycling. And using a pesticide in the tank to kill the algae, never has healthy outcomes for the fish...it's just not worth it.

What are your water tests showing? (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH primarily.)

What are you feeding? Any sinking pellets?

Can you tell us what the params actually are instead of saying just fine. "Just fine" can mean different things to different folks.

Given your skyhigh nitrites (10.0 posted in your other thread) it's obvious the water params are not "ok" and thus you have problems like this because the tank is not stable. You can limp along for a while, but ultimately the rotten water quality and over crowding is going to start teaching you some lessons about fish keeping that aren't much fun to learn.
