| Aquamaniacs Problem Profile -- Black Brush Algae
Name: Black Brush Algae, Black Beard Algae, or BBA
Type: Brushy dark colored algae
Agent: Actually a form of "red algae" in the genus Audouinella
Difficulty: Hard
Distribution: Attaches to edges of plant leaves, and sometimes stems
Symptoms: Tufts or patches of dark algae that grow like fringes on the edges of leaves
Treatments: BBA is basically an opportunistic algae that thrives in low CO2 situations. Increase CO2 levels via CO2 injection and dose with Seachem's Flourish Excel.
Prophylaxis: Meet the requirements of your plants by providing proper macro & micronutrient levels, as well as proper lighting intensity, duration and spectrum.
Mortality: High for delicate plants if allowed to dominate the tank
References: Google images
Notes: Fish only tanks need only remove artificial plants & equipment then scrape and rinse off the algae under the running tap.
Planted tanks need to increase CO2 levels and maintain them consistently. Levels as high as 30 ppm are suggested. Resist the temptation to do water changes when fighting BBA, as this alters CO2 levels. Add more CO2 via injection and dose with Flourish Excel. Remove visible tufts of algae as it begins to die back after treatment. |
